Grain Brain by David Perlmutter MD

I have had several friend's recommend Dr. David Perlmutter's book to me. I really have not been interested because I thought it was just another anti-carb book. A friend shared some of the details of the book with me, and it I let my guard down and bought the book. ( I love my healthy carbs!!)

If you have not heard of Grain Brain, you will. It has been on the New York's best sellers list and Dr. Perlmutter has quite a following. He touches on many studies and trends that prove that things  we are doing in our society are increasing the risk of brain diseases like alzheimers or dementia.

His goal is to help us be preventative, and one of the things he discusses is supplements... and specifically Nrf2 activation. ( Nrf2 activation is exactly what Protandim is!) When Nrf2 is activated in our cells, it up regulates our  good genes or survival genes,  and down regulates our bad genes. Even if our genetic makeup includes " bad genes," we can do something to down regulate their prominence in our health.

This is cutting edge science! If you have been taking your Protandim, good for you! If you have not, take it and tell your friends about it!

Nrf2 is going to become a common word in preventative health. You are ahead of the trend on this one!

All the Difference

Antioxidants....what is the definition? " A chemical compound or substance that inhibits oxidation." So in my layman's terms in how this effects our bodies is that antioxidants will get rid of or slow down the rate in which oxidation occurs on the inside of our body. If oxidation occurs on the outside of our body, we would see it, we would be rusting.  We can not see the oxidation ( oxidative stress) going on with our cells, but that is what it is..the rusting of our cells.

There are 2 ways our bodies can receive antioxidants. Nutritious foods, and our God given cells that produce antioxidant enzymes. This article is a GREAT explanation of the difference between the 2 and how powerful our own enzymes can be.

Oxidative Stress and Skin Cancer

This article talks about the real culprit of skin cancer…oxidative stress.  I was just telling someone today how different my skin is since I have used TruScience. I take my Protandim to lower my oxidative stress on the inside, but I use Tr Science on my face morning and night to lower my oxidative stress on my skin. There have been dermatologists who have taken before and after photos showing an increase in firmness and less wrinkles using TruScience and that is all great- but I use it for the HEALTH of my skin and my skin has never looked healthier…...even though my face is older than it has ever been!

Here is a link to the article- it is very interesting!

It has been a year!

It has been a year since I started taking Protandim and since I decided to become a part of the business. It has been a year of seeing great results with people taking control of their health with a natural product. The personal growth I have experienced this year by doing the  business has been incredible.

I was able to spend Saturday morning listening to one of my favorite leaders in the company. His name is Doc Marvin. He is a retired old country doctor that has a passion for helping people. Helping people with their health, but also with their basic needs. The reason he does the business is to donate as much as possible to an orphanage in Africa.

One of the key tidbits I left with on Saturday morning was about the # 3 cause of death in the US. He said that  #1 and #2 are heart disease and cancer. The third leading cause of the death in the US is complications from prescription drugs. All of the side effects mixed in with the number of drugs a person is on is creating cocktails that are slowly killing us- and these are drugs that doctors are telling us to go on, not drugs that are being abused.

Oxidative stress and Pediatric Migraines

Unfortunately I know a lot about migraines. I have suffered from migraines since I was a teenager and so far my oldest child has inherited the same problem. I have had years where the migraines are worse, I definitely know my triggers but sometimes they can just come out of the blue. My 17 year old daughter has been suffering with them since she was about 13. We finally have the correct " cocktail" she needs if one is coming on. Luckily, both of us can function normally if we have the correct medicine if one comes on.

Since I have been on Protandim, I have seen a decrease in the number I get. I am horrible at keeping good records of when I get a headache, but what I do keep a record of is how often I have to fill that $$$ medicine. About 3 months ago, I asked my oldest child to start taking Protandim as well. She is healthy 17 year old girl, so really the only thing we were hoping to see is a decrease in migraines. I am happy to say we have seen a significant decrease. We are both using our migraine medicine 50% less. That is saving me about 160.00 a month!!

Ultra Metabolism

I love the sound of that- " Ultra metabolism". Sounds like a fat burning machine! Basically that is the thinking behind Dr. Mark Hyman's New York Best Seller. He has some great, sound advice in his book about stress, our diet , how our sleep patterns all contribute to creating a slower metabolism as we age.

A lot of these things I have heard before relating to our metabolism, but he has a whole chapter dedicated to how oxidative stress hinders our metabolism's from working efficiently. Here is a quote from the book:

" Oxidation is commonly seen in the visible world as rusting of a car or a sliced apple turning brown. It is also responsible for the wrinkles on your face when you have been exposed to too much sunlight over the years. The problem is the rust not only exits in the visible or outside world. we actually rust on the inside. And this contributes to impaired metabolism, weight gain, and aging. Think of it as wrinkles on the inside".

He talks about other factors that contribute to an aging, slowing metabolism, so oxidative stress is not the only factor. I just find it interesting that science has come so far to see that it is not always as simple as just what we eat.

If you would like to order the book, I ordered it from here: Ultra-Metabolism
